  • Michael Moore on the Radio

    AUGUST 4, 2022

Arizona Spotlight just ran a bit of audio today of Michael Moore reading from the new book of drawings. Here’s a photo of the star of stage and screen in the AZPM studios, plus an image of his charcoal of Myrtle Creek in Oregon.

Arizona Spotlight runs Thursday at 8:30 am and 6:00 pm and on Saturday at 3:00 pm on NPR 89.1 or 1550 AM.

  • Tucson Artists, circa 1995

    JULY 25, 2022

I’m a big fan of Tucson photographer Steven Meckler’s 1995 book of 100 Tucson artist photos. “Steven Meckler Photographs: Tucson Artists” is a fine, offset printed book with varnished photos on quality stock. You may ask – what is offset printing? Offset book printers burn the image onto a plate, transferring an impression to a rubber blanket, then onto the printed surface, whereas digital printing is like making a book using a very high-end copier. As digital printing has improved, cheaper, faster products are possible, hence the rise of print on demand (PoD) books. For local, short-run art books book like this, offset printing provides a higher quality product, albeit at a higher cost. But no matter to me! The author, publisher and printer went all-out to make something truly memorable.

So, why am I talking about a twenty-seven-year-old book? Two reasons – first, because I have access to a number of mint copies of this book (most softbound, but also a few hardback) that I’d like to sell. Secondly, because I’m considering publishing a redux of this book idea with a new/updated set of Tucson artist photos. Wouldn’t that be fun?
