Paris artist and former Rancho Linda Vista artist in residence Jan Olsson created “The Sewing Room” in 2010. The lovely 11.5x8.75” oil pastel and graphite on board feels like a still life but with a figure in it. Jan writes, “I set this scene in my studio and worked for two or three days with a model who took a number of poses within it.” Now, compare that work to one of Jan’s more recent (2021) acrylic studies of a model in the studio. Jan remarked, “I guess both owe a debt to Vuillard….and this [later study] to Matisse and Diebenkorn.”
